Before you can start studying in Canada, you’ll need to prove that you’re proficient enough in English to receive instruction in it. Many people are familiar with IELTS, however numerous students also prefer not to take one because of its difficulty, price, and the amount of time it takes to get the result. But there’s another valid, cheaper, and faster option for proficiency tests: Duolingo English Proficiency Test. Nearly 200 schools across Canada accept this. Here are some of them:
- Langara College
- Selkirk College
- Saskatchewan Polytechnic
- Vancouver Community College
- Capilano University
- University of Canada West
- British Columbia Institute of Technology
- University of Northern British Columbia
- Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
- Kwantlen Polytechnic University
- Coquitlam College
- Douglas College
- University of Fraser Valley
- Humber College
- Centennial College
- Seneca College
- Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology
- Georgian College
- George Brown
As you can see, this is not an exhaustive list. If you’re curious about the school you’re interested in, you can always look up on Duolingo’s site. The required score may also vary from school to school. For example, Kwantlen requires a minimum score of 95 while UNBC requires at least a score of 105.
Duolingo is accepted in hundreds of schools. It’s also only $50USD (~$65CAD) and you’ll get the results in two or three days. The Duolingo test is new to many schools so the list won’t stop at 200 institutions. Institutions started accepting Duolingo during COVID to accommodate students who cannot provide English language proficiency due to closed IELTS centres. But it is only accepted for a limited time, so hurry and apply as early as NOW!
